Holmes Brothers: Promised Land

Robert "Bilbo" Walker: Promised Land

Okay now for our choices for the hottest new  releases of the last few months: it's real simple just remember the title "Promised Land." That's the name of two albums and their both favorites of Porkchop and Lonesome Bob. The first is by the Holmes Brothers on Rounder Records and combines their southern drenched gospel with real heartfelt blues. Undoubtably their best release ever - don't miss this one. If you were to ask Porkchop for his favorite cut on the album, he'd have to ruminate for a minute or two and then he'd recommend "Train Song" written by Tom Waits; Lonesome Bob would tell you to check out the cover of the disc and if that don't convince you to buy it then your heart has a hole in it. Porkchop would counter with the photo on the inside of Robert Bilbo Walker's "Promised Land" album where Bilbo is hopping on one leg, playing guitar in front of a limo in a cotton field. "I wish I had taken that" (if you want to see some of his ownphotos check out the Rock Rhythm & Blues shots he's taken); but beyond that Robert Walker is Jim O'Neal and Rooster Records latest Mississippi Delta find. The best raw Delta blues since Booba Barnes' "Heartbroken Man" or the Fat Possum releases of R L Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. Bilbo Walker mixes Chuck Berry and country music into his blues and you won't be dissatisfied. If you want the feel of the Mississippi Delta heat on an August night with a jar of homemade liquor being passed around the room, buy this album, turn the lights down low and turn the stereo up.
