THE RIVERMEN

"WIDE WATER SUN"

BS701D compact disc only

The Rivermen, a six piece outfit sprung from Toledo, Ohio, have created a considerable buzz in their native Midwest with their debut CD, "Wide Water Sun," and a barnstorming road  show that won them a cultishly loyal following before one note of their music was ever recorded. The band forms a kind of pressure cooker of American roots musics: blues, gospel, funk, bluegrass, and soul all find their way into  the mix. In doing so they have forged a sound altogether different from anything going today. The songs, written primarily by vocalist/percussionist Jeremy Lindsay, echo, in some ways, the work of other American  "storytellers" such as Dylan, John Prine, Robbie Robertson, and Lyle Lovett in their ring of authenticity as folk tales. The tales, such as they are, document lives that are

funny and  sador sad and funny, depending how the sun fell that day. With the recent addition of rhythm  men Duval Overton (bass) and Andre Bishop (drums), along with former Parliament Funkadelic keyboardist/singer Mike MoneyStone, the band's live show has become all the more explosive. Together with Lindsay, Jim McLean (guitar), and  splendid vocalist Michelle McGrath, the band has carved out

a place for itself somewhere in the expanse between Sly Stone and Bill Monroe - a divide it turns out not nearly as wide as you thought. Over, under,  and through the music, the Rivermen's three singers weave some of the strangest, most riveting harmonies you've heard. If you ask them, they'll tell you what they play is soul music- a music of Detroit, Nashville, and New Orleans;  and the hours and miles in between.
